An Adult Channel M3ul? What doing what on the Internet is safe for kids? For adults, it seems like the Internet has become a "rat maze" of sites with content that's not appropriate for children. But can you trust any site if they don't say "adult entertainment?" We've put together an infographic that answers this question and more! We hope you will share it with your friends, family members, coworkers—and especially your kids. A lot of sites are actually just trying to sneak content into your house without asking first. Check out our infographic, and if you're an adult, help us spread the word about the Adult Channel M3ul. The "Adult Channel M3ul" (or ACM 3ul) is a fake press release made by BTRanch.net to raise awareness of the flaws in content filtering software. The press release features a graph designed to look like an x-ray image of a man's hand holding up two remote controls with various buttons labeled as various content ratings. "ACM 3ul" comes from Adult Content Monitoring System software, which can be used by parents to prevent their children from viewing inappropriate content on the Internet. "M3ul" is a portmanteau of the words "menu" and "mullet," which comes from the fact that when a user attempts to view content on a site with Adult Content Monitoring software installed, they will see an error message reading "Page Not Found. Please check your Internet Connection or Contact your ISP. The page you are looking for has been blocked by the ACM 3ul." The press release describes how Adult Content Monitoring Systems have been fooled by many websites because they have buttons labeled as being from various sites, but when clicked take the user back to one of the user's previously visited sites, or to a completely different site. BTRanch. net claims that some websites have a "click farm," a group of people who label buttons on the website, which they then pass off to unsuspecting users from advertisements on free porn sites. In February 2002, BTRanch.net created a letter from the FCC demanding that the makers of Adult Content Monitoring Systems pay BTRanch.net $264 million in damages for not warning users that their computers were being monitored by the software. The letter included three photographs of a man holding up two remote controls labeled "ACM 3ul" and "BTRanch.com." The FCC claimed that these phrases were ones used by BTRanch to market their software and thus merited copyright infringement by them under U. S. law. BTRanch.net replied to the FCC's demands by saying that the ACM 3ul was a fictitious name used for promotional purposes, and would not be paying them any money because the software "does not work, and the FCC has admitted the same."
